Throughout our Asset Improvement Opportunities process (AIO), we regularly engage with our site operations crew to tackle challenges that span across safety, efficiency, and environmental concerns.
One issue that surfaced recently ran across all three - our difficulty separating oil, water, and sand from various waste streams at our Cheal facility. This resulted in rising costs and environmental concerns to our operations.
We at Matahio wanted to take more direct ownership and accountability of how we manage our waste to ensure it is done as effectively and sustainably as possible. We took action by designing and implementing a purpose-built multi-compartment tank that can utilise our existing heating and flushing capabilities to effectively pre-treat waste streams.
With this innovation, we have taken control of our waste management and ensured zero environmental impact.
With our purpose-built tank, we achieved seamless separation of oil and water on our site. This eliminates the need for third-party waste separation and minimises the risks associated with entrained hydrocarbons.
The separated water flows back into our water injection tanks, reducing resource waste and optimising efficiency.
By performing the separation process in-house, we have eliminated the logistical burden of transporting large volumes of water, oil, and sand for external processing.
Matahio's dedication to sustainability is at the core of this initiative. By ensuring that the separated sand is "clean," we can guarantee zero environmental impact during disposal.
