Backed by OCP, four experienced oil and gas industry professionals founded Matahio. They wanted to build a progressive energy company suited to the industry’s changing demands, with values framed around integrity, resilience, and collaboration, and a focus on operational efficiency, sound technical decision-making and responsible growth.
Matahio completed the acquisition of six onshore oil and gas licences in the Taranaki Basin, establishing a key operating base in New Zealand and restarted drilling at Cheal after a six-year pause. Matahio completed the acquisition of the Galoc field in the Philippines, along with the FPSO Intrepid Balanghai, which was mobilised at the Galoc site.

As successful drilling continued in New Zealand, Matahio’s portfolio was strengthened when its wholly owned subsidiary, Cheal Petroleum Limited, completed the acquisition of East West Petroleum’s 30% participating interest in the Cheal East permit, increasing its ownership to 100%.
Matahio also secured a working capital facility from Kadita Partners to support its offshore operations in the Philippines, helping revitalise the Galoc operations.
Matahio entered Thailand through a partnership with Horizon Oil, acquiring interests in the Sinphuhorm and Nam Phong conventional gas fields from Exxon Mobil. Following completion, Matahio assumed operatorship of the Nam Phong gas field and management of the MH Energy Thailand team.
Despite a pause on drilling in NZ, 2025 saw significant progress in gas development after a call to action by the NZ government and a successful trial of gas storage was completed at the Sidewinder permit.
In the Philippines, Matahio’s wholly-owned vehicle, NPG Pty Ltd, was awarded a first-of-its-kind service contract for the Galoc field, with 80% participating interest and operatorship.
Matahio entered into a Share Purchase Agreement to sell Matahio Energy New Zealand Ltd (MENZL) to Sunda Energy. The four founders of Matahio agreed to a Management Buyout (MBO) transaction involving a phase purchase of the Philippines and Thailand businesses by the management team. This allowed OCP to exit and fully realise their investment.
Matahio Energy Philippines, in partnership with Ophiolite Energy, was awarded Service Contract 90 for natural hydrogen exploration in onshore Leyte. The opportunity is positioned as a step into lower-carbon energy, leveraging Matahio’s oil and gas capabilities while supporting the Philippines’ energy transition and energy security ambitions.
